The Intermediate Check

  • The Setup - White has just played Qe2, threatening Black's queen on e7. Black's rook on d8 is also aligned with White's rook on d1. Instead of trading queens, Black has a tactical resource.
  • Rxd1+: Zwischenschach! - Black ignores the queen threat and plays the intermediate check Rxd1+. White is legally forced to address the check immediately, preventing White from capturing the black queen.
  • Qe1: White Blocks - White blocks the check by dropping the queen back to e1. However, the queen is now pinned and doomed.
  • Rxe1#: Checkmate! - Black's rook captures the queen, delivering checkmate. The intermediate check completely destroyed White's defensive calculation.
For experienced players

Before executing an automatic recapture or trade, always ask: ‘Do I have a check or a highly forcing intermediate threat first?’ Inserting a zwischenzug can displace your opponent’s pieces and alter the outcome of trades.
