Physical Anatomy: The shortest piece in the Staunton chess set. Characterized by a smooth, rounded spherical top sitting above a single slim collar ring and a weighted felt-padded pedestal base. In classic wood carving (like Boxwood and Sheesham), the pawn’s minimalist design reflects its humble status as the foot soldier of the board.

The tactical trickster. The only piece that can jump over other pieces, specializing in forks, outposts, and closed positions.
Physical Anatomy: The most intricate piece in any hand-carved chess set. Modeled after the horses of the Parthenon Frieze in classical Greek sculpture, the knight features a carved horse head with detailed mane ridges, flared nostrils, and alert ears mounted on a sturdy circular base. It is the only non-symmetrical, hand-sculpted piece.

The diagonal long-range sniper. Bound to a single square color for the entire game, slicing across open diagonals.
Physical Anatomy: A tall, slender piece distinguished by its mitered headtop containing a distinct diagonal cut-out slit (representing a bishop’s liturgical hat) topped by a small rounded finial ball. The smooth tapered stem sits on a double-ringed collar above a heavily weighted base.

The heavy artillery. Rooks command open files, double up on ranks, and execute deadly 7th-rank invasions in the endgame.
Physical Anatomy: A sturdy, cylindrical piece sculpted to resemble a medieval castle tower or turret (also known as a castle). Features four or five crenellated battlements (merlons and embrasures) crowning a solid, vertical wall structure anchored by a wide, heavy circular base.

The most powerful piece on the board. Combines the movements of the rook and bishop to deliver crushing attacks.
Physical Anatomy: The second-tallest piece on the board, crowned with a distinctive coronet featuring a crenellated ring of sharp points or rounded crest balls surrounding a central sphere. Its elegant flared waist leads down to a wide, heavily weighted felt base, signifying its supreme tactical dominance.

The ultimate objective. Must be protected at all costs during the opening and middle-game, but becomes a strong active piece in the endgame.
Physical Anatomy: The tallest and most majestic piece in the Staunton set. Crowned by a prominent Christian cross mounted atop a regal arched cap. Its thick, stately stem features multiple decorative collar rings expanding into a wide, heavily lead-weighted base that gives the monarch commanding presence on the board.
