When you play as Black, the board visually looks upside-down compared to White’s view — but the square names do not change. Coordinates are absolute. a1 is always a1, no matter which side of the table you sit on. Because you are facing the opposite direction, your own back row is rank 8, and the “a” file is on your right hand instead of your left.
For experienced players
Visualizing the board from the opponent’s perspective is a crucial strategic skill. A good mental drill: if you’re Black, the g7 square (often used to fianchetto your bishop) is on the second rank closest to you, near your right hand.
