How to Set Up a Chessboard

Before making a single move, the board and pieces must be arranged correctly. An incorrectly oriented board or swapped King/Queen position invalidates the entire opening.

Follow the Two Golden Rules to guarantee a flawless board setup every time.

The 2 Golden Rules of Board Setup

Rule 1: “White on the Right”

Orient the board so that the corner square closest to your right hand is a light-colored square (h1 for White, a8 for Black). If the bottom-right corner is dark, rotate the board 90 degrees.

Rule 2: “Queen on Her Own Color”

The Queen must always be placed on the central square matching her color:

• White Queen on the light square (d1).
• Black Queen on the dark square (d8).

The King sits directly next to the Queen on e1 (White) or e8 (Black). Notice how the Queens directly face each other across the d-file, and Kings face each other across the e-file.

Piece Arrangement (Outside to Inside)

1. Rooks occupy the outer corners (a1 and h1).
2. Knights sit next to the Rooks (b1 and g1).
3. Bishops sit next to the Knights (c1 and f1).
4. Queen and King occupy the center two squares (d1 and e1).
5. 8 Pawns form a solid protective wall across the entire 2nd rank (a2 through h2).
