How to Solve Mate in 2 Chess Puzzles Every Time
To solve a Mate in 2 chess puzzle, you must calculate a 3-ply forcing sequence: your initial key move (Ply 1), every legal defensive response by your opponent (Ply 2), and the final checkmating blow (Ply 3). Over 85% of Mate in 2 combinations begin with either a piece sacrifice that destroys the king's pawn shelter or a deflection check that lures the sole defender away from the mating square.
Include sacrificial checks (even giving up your Queen!). Because a check restricts the opponent to 1–3 legal replies, your calculation tree stays narrow and concrete.
Ask: "Which square would be Mate in 1 right now if one enemy defender disappeared?" Then sacrifice a piece to deflect that defender or decoy the king onto a fatal square.
