How the Pawn Moves

Pawns march straight forward but capture diagonally, and they never retreat.

Pawns are the foot soldiers of chess and have a completely unique way of moving. They always march straight forward one square at a time, but on their very first move, they have the option to jump forward two squares. However, they cannot capture pieces straight ahead — they only capture diagonally one square forward. Pawns are also the only pieces on the board that can never move backward. There are two special pawn rules that have their own quirks: en passant and pawn promotion.

For experienced players

Because pawns cannot retreat, every pawn advance creates permanent weaknesses in your structure that can never be undone.
