Securing an Outpost

  • What is an Outpost? - An outpost is a square on the 4th, 5th, or 6th rank that cannot be attacked by an enemy pawn, and is securely protected by one of your own pawns.
  • Nd5: Occupying the Outpost - White plants the knight firmly on d5. From this central outpost, the knight attacks e7, c7, b6, and f6 while blocking enemy line of sight.
  • The Golden Rule of Outposts - Knights love outposts! An entrenched knight on a 5th or 6th rank outpost is often worth more than a rook.

An outpost is an advanced square protected by a friendly pawn that can never be driven away by an enemy pawn.

Why Outposts Are So Deadly

  1. Immunity: Without enemy pawns to kick the piece away, an outpost piece stays permanently entrenched.
  2. Knight Paradise: Knights have short range, so placing them deep in enemy territory on an outpost radiates tactical pressure across the entire board.
